If you’re not from Northern Europe, chances are, you’re not very familiar with lingonberries. Lingonberries are red berries smaller and juicier than their distant cousin, cranberries. They are abundant in Scandinavia, hence why they are the national fruit of Scandinavia!
Lingonberries grow on low bushes in the forest and they fully ripen around September. If you do end up going lingonberry picking, it isn’t recommended to eat them raw because of their bitter and sour taste, so people usually add sugar to them and pair them with fish, dessert, and best of all, meatballs!
Lingonberries, being a part of the same family as blueberries, also have loads of antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin C, and magnesium. These berries have been found to have disease-fighting capabilities due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory characteristics.
Interestingly, they also contain unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, almost as much as fish per unit of energy!
Lingonberries provide great health benefits and accompany the famous Swedish meatballs perfectly, but they are also a great addition to our ‘Autumn Blend’!
Make sure to get a taste of these berries this autumn👍🏻
