Sweden has been recognized as one of the most progressive and socially liberal countries in the world regarding LGBT rights. Homosexual relationships were legalized in 1944 and Sweden was the first country in the world to legally allow a gender change for the transgender in 1972. Finally in 2009, Sweden was the seventh country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.
To further celebrate the LGBT community, Stockholm Pride was founded in 1998 when Stockholm hosted the first EuroPride event! Stockholm Pride is a non-profit, non-governmental organization with around 150 individuals, companies, and organizations as members. Stockholm Pride supports the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender community, as well as the Intersex, and Queer!
The core values of Stockholm Pride are…
♡ to support the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU
♡ to strengthen the rights of LGBT people and actively oppose any forms of discrimination
♡ to show solidarity with other movements that are at risk of discrimination and oppression
♡ to open up to each and every one that share the above mentioned values!
After 1998, Stockholm Pride has been organized annually and it is now the largest LGBTIQ event held in all of Scandinavia. With over 600 programs, around 500,000 people visit the festival every year with around 45,000 people participating in the grand parade on the last day of the week. The parade, which is Scandinavia’s largest Pride parade, marches through central Stockholm and it is a truly delightful and colorful manifestation of love for human rights.
This year is the 20th anniversary for Stockholm Pride and the Pride week started July 27th and it goes until August 5th, with the parade march on Saturday August 4th! So, make sure to visit Stockholm during this time as there will be various event throughout the week and if you have the chance, don’t miss the parade on the 4th as it will be one of the most joyful and vibrant parades you will ever witness!
We at Midsummer Tea fully support the LGBTIQ community and are proud to be members of this progressive country!
