Why Skincare Brands Are Using White Tea

You may have noticed that many skincare companies have started releasing products that contain 'white tea'. There is very good reason for this, and we are in full support of this fantastic movement.
There are many ways you can benefit from drinking white tea on a daily basis, the amount of antioxidants found within these leaves is super high! These antioxidants repair cells all over the body, which can have an incredibly positive effect on your immune system and your organs, including our largest organ, SKIN.
The healing benefits of this tea has been known for years, it has actually been labelled 'the tea of eternal youth' which makes sense when it comes to the health benefits and the skin benefits. Lets get into the how's and why's...
SCIENCE BREAKDOWN
The Camellia sinensis (tea plant) plant's leaves contain antioxidants called catechins. Black and green tea go through a fermentation process that reduces the amount of catechins, whereas white tea leaves and buds are left unprocessed or mildy steamed right after picking which results in these leaves keeping almosy all of their catechins. Which of course means that white tea has a higher level of antioxidants than any other tea.
HOW CAN IT IMPROVE SKIN?
Skin aging happens in two main ways — internal aging and external aging.
External aging refers to environmental factors such as the suns rays and internal aging (natural aging) can be caused by factors inside your body such as free radicals and some enzymes. The polyphenols and catechins found in white tea may help protect your skin both internal and external aging.
The two main proteins found in the skin are ELASTIN + COLLAGEN. Elastin is responsible for the elasticity of the skin and also the quick healing of wounds. Collagen is responsible for supporting the strength in the skin as well as the elasticity. When these two proteins are broken down it can lead to wrinkles and sagging skin.
Researchers have found that white tea extract may actually prevent breakdown in collagen and elastin, which of course results in glowing, youthful skin!
HOW MUCH TEA DO I NEED TO DRINK?
Researchers that conducted the experiments were using much less white tea than you would normally consume in one cup of tea. Which means, you could experience skin improvements from drinking one cup a day, but imagine what this super tea could potentially do to your skin if you drank more! The phrase 'as smooth as a baby's butt' comes to mind ;)
We only use Organic Silver Needle White Tea in our Midsummer Tea blends. It is the highest quality tea available which is why the prices of our 50g bags are the way they are. But if you stop and think about what you would normally spend on skincare, I think the amount of benefits including skin health make this purchase worth it!
